ABOUT

Traditional chess sets are often heavy, bulky and designed to stay at home. I wanted to create a lighter, more portable alternative. A chess set that could travel with us and be played anywhere, while remaining simple enough to live as an object at home.

The design reduces the game to its essential elements. The pieces draw from the geometric and functional approach of the Bauhaus, particularly Josef Hartwigs 1923 chess set, while being redesigned to be compact, robust and easy to handle. The box also functions as the chessboard, reducing the number of elements needed to play. The board itself is defined by positive and negative space, letting light and shadow create the grid.

Paper prototypes helped define the dimensions and proportions before moving into 3D modelling and iterative 3D printing. The box was printed in PLA for its lightness and ease of production, while the pieces were printed in resin for greater precision and stability.
